I've driven a '94 316 and i loved it.
It wasn't fast at all, but its so nice to drive. The driving position feels like you're in a cockpit because the transmission tunnel splits you and the passenger side, and even the centre consol faces you.
Even though they're not quick, if they're driven correctly you can still get the arse oot and have a bit of fun.

Nah, it won't be too bad to insure.
Spares and repairs will be more expensive though.
This is the one my mate had. We called it 'Ursula' as she was a big heavy German lady

He picked it up for £600 and it was a lot of fun for the money.

they arent slow or fast they are just average.
But a more reliable car i have never owned.
Did loads of miles loads of motorway and only ever had to replace the rear shocks on one mot.
And despite what people think they arent expensive for parts either!

Am I wrong in thinking a '94 will be the 1.9 engine?

You don't get a 2 door saloon. You get a 2dr coupé or a 4dr saloon. The prices of the 2 door coupé will almost certainly be more than the less popular saloon.

Not if its a 316.
I think the earlier model ie. the E30s were a bit wierd when it came to boot badges and engine sizes.

Eck is right, my Mum had both a 1991 E36 and now has a 2000 E46, both badged as 316i and both had the same 1.9 8v engine I believe.

The E30 316 used a 1.8
The E36 316 uses the M40B16 engine which is 1596cc (1.6)
The E46 316 (1998-2001) uses the M43B16 engine which is 1596cc (1.6)
The E46 316 (2001-2005) used either the N42B18 or N46B18 engines. Both of which are 1796cc (1.8)

My mums engine is definitely 1895cc, as is stated on the V5 and all the BMW paperwork from where it was bought brand new.

Well according to wiki, it should have a 318i badge on the back

I trust parkers a lot more than wiki.
All the ones made after 2001 were badged 318 according to parkers, which had a slightly higher level of tune that the 316 version.

I see. Well i stand corrected.
So, do you think the E36's were the same deal?
Because if that is the case they really are slow if you considder my 1.6 Escort was faster than my mates 1.8, nearly 1.9 316.

From looking at Parkers again, it seems the E36 is a 1596cc engine, and yes, it is even slower - 100 bhp.

If only I could be arsed editing wiki's chart and putting them right.
I think i'd rather just go to my bed
