right at the moment im at college studying music tech and sound engineering, anyway i think ive learned alot during my time there know how to use alot of equipment (neve 57 series desks, protools, and the rest of the sequencers and am very good) and was planning on doing a further 3 years (ba hons) but ive got to the point where im a bit bored of it all and dont know if i can see myself being in the music industry all my life. the pay isnt great unless you make it big, and to make it big it takes years and alot of luck and alot of know the right people... (however im sure i could get work through peoples contacts etc) but im also considering doing a different course for uni, something along the lines of graphic design and IT etc... but im really unsure what i want to do, im 18 so i have got plenty of time but if i take a gap year i know i wont want to go back after... i could also look for work experience in the music / tv area such as studio work (teaboy starting off!!) or working with sound for film etc ,,, bbc take on alot of people i hear...

but im totally unsure on what to do, and wondered if anyone on here is doing a degree in graphic design or something similar.... im really keen with things like photoshop, and have learned a great deal by teaching myself. used to love learning about web design etc but totally forgot any knowledge i had using dream-weaver etc, i am also quite handy around a comp etc...

need help guys! what course should i go for or what should i do

You have to honestly ask yourself whether uni in any of those courses is gonna get you a job?

My mate did media studies at uni and got 1st class degree and still has no job after 2 years!!!

At uni i'm surrounded by people doing what I consider to be 'doss' courses, they barely have any lectures or exams and they're all under the illusion they're gonna walk out into a 30k job

I bet most don't.

Only go to uni and do something worthwhile imo.

There's some rich kids at uni I know, done doss courses just for the laugh - I was like 'what's your plans you're now graduating?' - 'oh i don't know, go for a manager job at bla bla bla' - Wtf? 'How does that relate to your degree?'

'Oh no I didn't do my degree to help my career, I just did it as it's something i enjoy' Oh well, daddy will get him a job whatever

Seriously though, I think it's stupid how many kids are told they should definately go to degree, as most do something fairly pointless (imo), like geography, history, media studies, rural science, etc etc.

Would've been far more productive to have just got a job at the bottom after college and spent 3 years working their way up, as a degree (especially one that anyone can get easily in something doss) is no guarentee to a job or high pay... infact a lot of places these days want people with a lot of experience (as it proves they can actually do the job).

i quickly skimmed what was said but pretty much, i was in the same boat.. i did two years of music tech and got a btec from it and was considering uni but realistically theres like 10 jobs a year or something daft in the industry so i just went off and got a full time job in parts..

im not exactly happy in parts, dont get me wrong it pays ok and its something to do but i would rather be elsewhere doing something more exciting

Out of those 2, graphic design. I didnt go to uni (just did a year foundation diploma at college) and am doing very well for myself now. Although that has taken 3/4 years

Dont think just because you got a degree you will get a job, places look for people with experience these days instead of people that may have scraped through a BA HONS degree

Kind of same boat as dave, i was planning on doing the degree in graphic design, ended up finishing with just a HND (3yr course) and now im working in a worldwide publishers in the design studio (only 3 of us) getting my experience. Once i have my 2yrs experience i'll look at better studios etc.

With Graphic Design you don't really need qualifications as such, you just need to be able to show you know what your doing, how to do it and that you have experience. All about the portfolio!

That said, its hard to get into as its catch 22 situations, you apply for a job that wants experience of 2+ yrs, but you can't get the experience because you can't get a job without any. Have to start of low/or as a freelancer (which doesn't work 90% of the time) and wait 2 yrs to get your experience.

Im doing sound engineering at SAE (school of audio engineering) up here in liverpool.

If you want to get into the music industry as a sound engineer, there reallllllllly is no better place to go. Its the world leader in sound engineering.

When they 1st started up over here, people were forging the certificate's as they were so sought after

http://www.sae.edu/

Check it out, well worth the £ in my opinion!

Depends how badly you want one of those 10 jobs before you'll consider doing something you won't enjoy.
