You can't do anything much with an account number and sort code without the password on the account, the name, the address or the correct signigture.

No as you need the rest of the card number as well as the number off the back of the card

Your account number IS NOT your number on the front of the card.

its safe to give out, after all its written on every cheque you write and its clearly shown on most debit cards.
many companies that I use for parts clearly display their account name, sort code, account number, bank name and address and their address on their websites.

At worst I think a direct debit could be set up without your consent but you should be able to get any charges reclaimed back from the bank. IIRC Jeremy Clarkson was hit by this recently.

The only thing you can do is give to the british heart foundatiob, they dont require a signature. Jeremy clarkson said the same thing, safe as houses, then someone donated using his details, was in the papers for weeks.

my old hsbc account number was the last 8 of my card number.
the first 8 digits represent card type and issuing company.

My sort code and account number are both in the long number (HSBC as above)

they will do as that info is needed when setting up an account.

Some banks use the account number as the last 8 digits of the card number, others dont...all comes down to the bank at hte end of the day
*EDIT*
HSBC use the account number in the card number, whereas nationwide put the account number in smaller numbers at the bottom of the card. Then theres natwest who dont put the account number anywhere on the card
