i've been told not to put any form of wax on within a month of painting because it traps the solvent and cant evaporate

Rub the laquer down with some high grit paper!

Then polish them up from that!

How long should i leave the laquer really though?

Wax and polish are two differant things. So its ok to use a machine polisher with a compound like G3 to flatten back the paint. But a wax will seal the paint to protect it, which you dont want too soon after painting.
