www.thebikeinsurer.co.uk

Seems the cheapest i could find. Though would only insure me fully comp on the R6 at a whopping £1500.

Have decided to go with a cheaper alternative for a first bike, and something abit easier to learn with (Kawasaki ER6-F). Then get an R6 after that.

I think that is a better idea... getting an R6 as a first dike is dicing with death!

Utter bollocks!

For a start, your generalised comment doesn't take into consideration the possibility of having a restricted R6 for a 1st bike.

Secondly, I've had my R6 since last September (when I took a DAS course) and I've not had any moments where I've "diced with death"... infact, my instructor advised me to buy the bike based on the way I ride.

Just because a bike is capable of doing (x)MPH, or 0-60 in (x)s... doesn't mean the rider is going to be doing those kind of speeds.

Just to add... I wanted a CBR or an R6 before I did my test, but then during the course whilst learning to ride on an ER5, I changed my mind and thought "I'll get one of these as a 1st bike... cheap to buy and not bothered then if I drop it"
My instructor talked me out of that, saying that if I get an ER5 I would be bored of it in no time... as I don't ride like a cock he said go get an R6. I must say I think I ride better on that than I would have done on an ER5. I take pride in the R6 and would hate to damage it, so much so that I'm even more careful now than when I was learning... I still have fun on the bike, but fun doesn't have to mean maxxing the bike out for the entire ride.

Get yourself whatever you feel comfortable with, take pride in it, maintain it well and look after your protective gear. Most of all, enjoy yourself, and take care.

Get a Thunderace 1000, like a very early R1 £2-3k to buy and won't be as bad on insurance.

Why?

If it's your 1st bike it's stupid as half pint said, you'll end up in a ditch / wrapped around a tree within a year. Think about your daughter...

Thing with riding a bike is it's a lot of getting your mind to adjust. Looking where your heading in advance, being aware all around you, being commited to leaning the bike over, being able to deal with a situation and not panic and just pull on the front brake.

I've got a 34 bhp Aprilia RS and in my first say 3-6 months I had a few scares... and that bike only tops about 110 mph (flat on the tank, downhill).

Stupid things like, feeling like i was going too quick into a bend, car coming the other way and initially grabbing the front brake (which made the bike stand up and go straight! (at the car)) but quickly avoided it...

And that's on a slower and much much lighter bike. The bike just tips into the corners with absolute ease, loads of grip too (the rear tyre is wider than the one on my dad's harley).

I think if you got a r6 as your first bike, one of 3 things will happen.

Either,

A ) you'll sadly go to quick / not be used to handling the bike or power and fall off badly injuring yourself.

B ) you'll go to quick and get nicked for speeding early.

or

C ) you'll become one of those riders who blast it along the straights, but are pussies in the bend / don't actually ride the bike properly (chicken strips on the outside of your rear tyres etc)...

I personally want a R6, but I don't plan to get one for a while, after this RS I'm gonna step up to something like Honda 400 VFR / Kawaksaki 400R ...

Once i'm used to that, maybe then move up to a r6.

This is my RS

It's got plenty of poke for just riding about, will accelerate quicker than my car / overtakes things easily and handles superbly (it has some like dunlop something or other tyres, really sticky, made for track use I think ... kinda like equiv of Toyo R888 car tyres) - just flicks into any bend...

Worst part is A ) noise B ) size of exhaust (gives game away) and C ) you have to keep it revving / short power band... it's a lot of work to keep it buzzing, constantly upshifting / downshifting - but that's half the fun

Problem with a bike is that it's so unforgiving... nothing like driving a car. You have to be completely commited through a section of road, but if there's anything that causes you to have to avoid something or brake sharply, it can cause real problems... Where as a car, it'd be easy to avoid or brake for, on the bike braking may make the bike fall from underneathe you or cause you to go straight head on into what you were avoiding.

Ok, so you'll claim you'll never ride it quick or go fast round a bend, but what's the point in having the bike if you're not gonna use it for the fun of going through the bends?

I see what you're saying Paul. It's just I don't want to buy one bike, upgrade it, upgrade it again and then get a R6. It'll be a total waste of money, and im on a low wage as it is.

You obviously don't believe me when I say I AM going to take it slow for ages, until i'm used to it. It's just afetr my little acciedent I'm ALOT more aware of things around me, and even more so on a bike.

I know they're death traps, thats why i'm going to take my time getting used it, and slowly get quicker and quicker.

Thanks for all your help though guys

don't then... just buy a cheap RS bike, use it to learn on (after you do CBT, on L's) ride it for a few months, sell it for same you paid.

I'm literally talking about not jumping straight on the R6... not waiting years.

To be honest it'd be a waste to ride the bike completely slowly all the time...

I disagree, but that's because I got a 1200 for my first bike. You can just plod along on it keep up with anything but superbikes. Worst thing a new rider can do is exceed his ability, it doesn't matter what bike you ride you control the throttle at the end of the day. Just go at your own pace and you should be fine.
