Check for rust in the battery tray/boot well and around the sunroof.
oh and check behind the plastics on the rear arches as they rot like mad.

Is he just nailing them from cold? 'Chipped' it so its running twice as much boost? Regular oil change?
I thought they didnt need constant work if correctly looked after

I disagree.
If they're looked after properly, they're not any worse than any other car of that age.
The engines are fine unless you just turn the boost up and hope.

i know 3 people that have owned one and currently own one, and they all had to be constantly tinkered with due to them being temprimental with certain parts, two of them did everything correctly and did the supporting mods to turn the boost up and had issues with oil pressure and constant boost problems etc, there too tempremental to have as a daily.

If you buy a shit one, that's all it will ever be unless you replace everything.
We deal with them every day at work, you get good ones, bad ones and really really shit ones, the good ones are used EVERY DAY without major issues. Yes, you get the odd little thing going wrong, but that's the same for 95% of the cars of the same age.
One of our customers used one with over 300bhp as a daily FFS, the only issue he had was eating gearboxes.
Buy a good one and look after it properly and it WILL be fine, you'll all live happily ever after.
The end.
