Looking at booking a train from bridgend to sheffield, changing at Cheltenham Spa. However there is only 8 mins delay between the train arriving and the other one leaving, am i likely to miss it or are they usually there early? (havent been on a train for years)

Trains seem to be fairly accurate on their times, 8 mins is a bit of a rush though, as the platform could be a fair trek from other one.

only 2 platforms at Cheltenham so should be easy enough to run from one to the other

Will be tight but should be fine
Check when the next train to Sheffield is from Cheltenham Spa to see how long you'd have to wait

Nothing a bit of blagging and ignorance pleading can't fix. Done it many times before.

the majority of the time you should make an 8min connection, providing your not travelling with first great western, I assume your catching the arriva cheltenham - maesteg in which case you shouldn't have any problems what so ever onwards from cheltenham.
edit: if you miss your connection, you just take the next one - its not your personal fault if its due to a delayed train and therefore you will have no problems, if you miss the connection 9 times out of 10 your not the only one
further only two platforms at cheltenham iirc so no problems crossing platforms even though you shouldn't need to change platform
