I've got to get a car for this summer and I've got to start looking around now, because come may etc. i'll be doing exams so won't really have the time.....

SO, can anyone recommend a car, for around £1500 - £1800.

I'm after something as new as i can get for the money really, insurance isn't a major issue, but i don't want anything that'll cost me a small fortune to run. My commute is only about 15 miles or so a day, and i'll only probably be keeping it for the summer....

So far i've looked at:

  • Saxo VTR / VTS - but i've never been a big fan of the pedal arrangement, same goes for the 106 really.
  • Xsara VTS - plenty for your money
  • Corsa's - but i've had two already and driven both of my mums corsas so fancy a change
  • Pug 206 - 1.4 maybe, or a high mileage GTI or HDI
  • Pug 306 - dturbo, but tend to be higher milers....
  • Astras??
  • And last, but not least..... a rover 25! Seems like these are going for penny's now, i know about the head gasket issue, but i've seen some close to home for around 1300 notes with only 45,000 on the clock.

Question is, would i be rediculed for the rest of my days by going for a rover?

Can anyone think of anymore I could look at?

Cheers

Get a Paxo, you can spend all your hard earned cash keeping it running and all your free time stoping it from leaking

YES, you would get forever bullied for buying a rover.

Get a megane coupe...there was one near me with 75k, it was 1.6 16v, black with full leather and it was an x reg for only...£1595!! Bargain!!

No problem.

I think they are really nice, well specced and cheap aswell but the clutch may feel a little bit heavy if your not used to renaults.

my bf had a rover coupe and had done nearly 90000 and only had one head, and he thrashed it everywhere! Everyone took the p*ss for buying a grandad car but soon took it back when he got it slammed on 17s, looked mint imo!

My uncle replaced the head gasket on his 1999 416 saloon FIVE TIMES, then he sold it and the guy had to fit another one - which only lasted 3 days before expiring again. The car was then just scrapped with only 76000 miles on the clock.

rovers got a problem called head shake where the dowels that hold the head in place are plastic and they start to move cauing head gasket to go

Yep but rovers accountants realised they could save a few pennies per engine by doing it with plastic ones.
Same with the K series engines in freelanders too.

its the rover k-series that have the head gasket issues.

other rovers and especially from the era of the Honda collaboration are just as reliable as most other cars out there.
