Have been to Domincan Republic twice now, both times were excellent.
Think the first was Puerto Plata (was only young), but the second time (3-4yrs ago) def was. Weather was great and the actual Puerto Plata resort was fine as is basically a sealed off tourist resort. Outside of that can be a little dodgey, but not too bad if you are sensible.

Think it has 10+ hotels aswell as a load of restaurants/shops/apartments/etc, its just like a town thats has barriers at its entry to stop locals coming in - so that could of been any of the hotels

Im lucky as dont get bitten ever so they didnt bother me. Other people I went with got bitten though. Make sure you talk to the docs before you go, as I know some will suggest certain medication before you go, and I'd certainly suggest malaria tablets if you are prone to getting bitten.
