last year i got accepted at derby uni to do a 4 year degree course in computer networking. I deferred entry till 2008 cos i wasnt redi to go just yet. is anyone else doing the same sorta course and what is it like??? how much essay writing, coursework etc. im trying to decide whether 4 years is actually worth it.

I'd have a look what kind of job's you'll realistically get with a computer networking degree, I know nothing about the uni however so may be amazing for it.

tbh mate, i was at uni for 3 years full time and i've gone to day release for my last year. but those three years were the best three years of my life!
alot of my mates didn't go to uni and did apprenticeships instead and always used to ask me why i hadn't followed suit and tbh i don't know why i didn't because i wouldn't have 15grand of student debt to pay back and i would probably have my own place by now aswell.
but fuck me i wouldn't change my three years of uni for anything! its was 3 years of getting pissed and not giving a fuck about anything. yeh i've got alot of unwanted debt now but it was bloody good fun getting it and i've lived a little.
in saying this im not saying my mates havent lived life to the full in the time i was at uni but they did have to live with the responsibility of having a full time job whereas i didn't. if i had to go back and choose between going to uni or not i would go hands down. i loved it.

Also, they're quite likely to stay on what they're earning for quite a while.
With a degree you're most likely to progress quicker, even if starting off on the circa £15k.

Deano, depends on the degree, i know loads of people with degrees and shit jobs, a degree these days doesn't give you a passive right to earn loads of kkkk's (obviously some do, but majority no) lots of other factors involved.
I'm in same boat, all my mates have trades 3 are self employed joiners earrning daft amounts from 500+ a week, (after tax) I know a few month back my best mate was on 750 after tax a week on a job they had.

Derby isn't that bad; plenty of bars, restaurants etc. Not sure on Nightclubs as I've not been out clubbing only drinking but I don't mind Derby at all. the area around Friarsgate is good

I'm in my final 6 weeks of doing
BSc (honours) Network Managment and Design
I did two years at college to do a HND then entered Uni at 3rd year
Did 6 months then went on a 12 month placement.
What do you need to know?

 makes me mad seeing all the student dossers doing dossy courses with hardly any lectures, assignments or exams! Getting drunk all the time...
while I'm sitting in doing loads of work, tonnes of lectures and exams

Nothing wrong with Derby, the uni isn't the best in the country, but it's having a lot of money pushed into it.
Drinking in derby is great, everywhere is within walking distance from halls, and there's a ton of pubs, whether you're a chav moron, or an emo kid, there's a pretty wide range for everyone really.
Club wise there's always places to go until 2am. Scream is open every night. You've got Zanzibar open a few nights a week for complete cheese and kids, Mosh, Bluenote for "rock/ska/metal" stuff open a few nights a week.
I went to Derby uni, and ended up getting in a lot fo debt and getting drunk most nights, ended up working in a pub in town for a couple of years.
As long as you're commited to actually going to your lectures etc... then go for it.
I only came to uni to get out of proper work for a few years and i've done it well

I study quantity surveying, i have worked for two years doing this job and started out earning 16/17k and now earn just shy of the 30k mark. its not an easy course to do. its not like i was in uni one day a week.
i work hard at exam time and submit my courseworks. i do enough to pass and thats it. maybe not the best attitude but im getting through and i'll have a degree so im not bothered.

the only thing that was worrying me in the first instance was not being able to keep up with all the coursework and essays and stuff like that, and having a lot of debt hanging over me. living by myself doesnt worry me cos ive been doing that for the last year and a half.
i want to become an IT technician or such like. ive tried the route of applying at places who are offering trainee positions but i never managed to get them. so uni was my last chance of getting into IT. i currently work for Mercedes, started last week, but its not something i want a career in, its just not me. i have always wanted to work in IT but never got the chance.

When I graduate this summer I will have 0 debt
I did end up staying at home, which let me keep a car and buy a motorbike.
I do pay rent each month and have to cover myself for all expenses
