I recently found a car for sale which was exactly what i was looking for. I rang the owner and he told me it was provisionally sold and he would be in touch today to let me know if it went. Luckily it didnt

Anyway, A friend of mine ran the car through a HPI check (he is a car salesman) and the car came back as it has been cat c repaired. The ad does not mention anything about previous repairs etc. Its a 99 corsa b with full irmscher kit advertised for £1800. How much should i be looking to knock him down by for it being a cat c?

1.6 sport, 66 thou on the clock. I have worked on it before i moved garages and tbh i wouldnt have known it was a cat c. car was repaired 5-6 years ago

me neither phil, its a 99 plate. No mention of previous repairs in the add. It has airdam front and rears, irmscher skirts and twin spoke 15" alloy. It does look nice just need an idea of what kind of price i should be looking to offer

Am I right in thinking Cat D could just be bodywork etc and Cat C had to have VOSA checks and what not?

Either way, I'd offer 3/4 of what has has asked.

If it was repaired 5-6 years ago, that means it was around 2-3 years old, and with that in mind, would be worth alot more then, and it takes around 60% cost of the car in damage to write it off. So say it was worth 6k back then, to write it off, it would have needed over 3k of repairs.

So id say dont pay no more than 1k, if you were even thinking about getting it.

Cat D or C can involve body work. Just Cat C is worse, damaged more structually. Both can be quite bad damage. Just that Cat C needs a VIC check as you say, to prove its roadworthy.

Ive done a bit of research on the net about cat c write offs, some places say its and uneconomical cosmetic repair while others say "significant damage" Ive arranged to go view it tommorrow. Going to check the sills, crumple zones, boot etc, any other areas worth going over with a tooth comb?

He may be suprised to find it was a cat c.

Also, if he is a twat, he will decline your offer & get the full amount by not telling other interested people it was a cat c.

Check front panel, back panel and boot floor, check spot welds on quarters, sills and roof to see if they are origional and see if chassis legs look origional.

The Laguna was a Cat C, and all that needed replacing was the door and the wing. I wouldn't worry about it, but I'd try and find out what the damage was.

Ive just popped to work and have a copy of the hpi check infront of me. ive just rang the guy up age there are a couple of things im concerned about, one being the damage, another being the last change of keeper was 17/02/2008. Im starting to get quite put off tbh

What difference will a magnet make? A decent filler repair will be pulled out properly and a VERY thin skim of filler, so a magnet would still pick up the metal. Also if your good enough with the eye, you can spot the filler a mile off.
