They used to be in Alphabetical order Matt.

I believe the most used keys were originally grouped in the centre, but on typewriters it could cause problems. Professional typists did it so quickly that they hit the keys and they would jam together when the levers came up to hit the ribbon. So, they moved the keys apart to prevent this.
