sold a car to a "mate" last year and supidly left him to register it and now i keep gettin speeding fines and parking tickets. cant do anything about it without proof of purchase and the lad i sold it to is being a cock. thought about just reporting it as stolen seeing as its still in my name.

tell him that youll go to the police then if he doesnt pay them.

incidentally what happens if you got caught speeding whilst the log book was being changed? i assume it gets sent to original owner then he says it wasnt him and it goes to the new owner?

Contact the DVLA & say you sent the V5 to them some time ago to change ownership & it obviously hasnt happened & your getting tax reminders & what not sent to you. Give them the date you sold the car & the new owner details.

^^^ sounds like the best idea TBH, If they cant do anything, inform the new keeper you intend to go to the police and report it stolen if he does not pay up and sort it out

This happened to me. I bought a car from a lad in london. We met halfway, about 100 miles each, once we went to swap he realised he had forgotten the logbook, I said I wouldn't hand over cash without it. He drove home like a twat, got the logbook and drove back like a twat again. About a fortnight later I got 3 tickets for exceeding 100mph!!! He denied it as did I(was 50 miles further south of where we met), lots of statements sent etc. Got a court date through. Week before court a copper called me to ask my skin colour!!!!!(I'm white btw), the lad who I bought from was black and you could clearly see his face in every photo!!!

Write to the DVLa with new details and as stated above.

Just write a pre-dated receipt of sale for yourself about the sale.
Doesn't matter if he doesn't have a copy.

How long has this been going on for exactly?

Minute the 1st fine came through the door you should have contacted the DVLA!

i had a parking fine through for a car id sold and i rang the dvla and all they could do was change the ownership details from the date i rang them, they werent interested in what i should do about the fine etc.

i sent the v5 off myself but it obviously got lost in the post, i had manchester city council threatening me with court, it dragged on for 6 months i had to send original insurance docs in to show when my policy had changed over.

Andy, the only thing you can really do is what colin said and contact the DVLA.

As harsh as it is, it's your own fault for leaving it to the new keeper. This makes you liable for everything as it's still in your name.

Unlucky.

Get as much evidence as you can.

As Ed said if you changed insurance on day you sold it - get proof & send it to them.
Ask for photographic evidence for the speeding fines - assuming they were from mobile cameras, even if fixed it might show a time when you were somewhere where you have proof, at work etc
Any witness to say you sold it, anyone you know thats in a professional role - Dr, Lawyer, policeman. That can maybe write a wee note saying they can confirm you are no longer in ownership of the vehicle.

Send the lot to DVLA - they must do something then!

It must of been some time ago....months & months if there at the stage to take you to court! Hows he tax/mot it without the V5?

Police might be a shot, just go to them say that the c ars been sold & this guys for some reason not wanting it in his name. They will just have a patrol car pull it if they see him on the road, when it comes clear its not registered to him there will be questions. If he admits to the police its his (why wouldnt he? If its not his then its not borrowed because its not yours - So who's is it) & you can get proof when you sold it (cancelled ins?) then I think you could easilly get out of this mess!!
