Just had a read on the gov website. Seems roadtax is on the up again, and a duty is going to be increased each year, starting with 2p in oct. so technically the fuel tax esculator is back.

just had a quick scan over the page so details may be slightly mis-interpreted. any one shed any light on it?

That's pretty much it in a nut shell.

What I don't like, is that car tax is purely based on emissions. Get a VW Polo Bluemotion, and you don't pay car tax. Yet this car still requires street lamps, surfaced roads, drainage, traffic lights, street signs etc. If everyone in the country bought these cars, or those that pay £35/year, the government would be fucked.

no they would then bump up the tax on those too. when we all start running round in hydrogen powered cars or whatever alternative fuel takes off in the future there will be some new tax made up to cover them too

Nothing green about it at all. Just another "general tax" to swell government coffers. I don't think raising fuel duty is the answer though, cos it affects those who are most reliant on it. For example, those in rural areas who rely on their private vehicles due to the lack of a regular and reliable public transport system. Road hauliers are hammered and everyone ends up paying more as transport costs increase. Likewise, railway and shipping costs go up. Fuel duty affects everyone, even non-drivers.

the £300 is the cost of the first year tax for a brand new, newly registered car.

Sometimes, they can't win though.

When they try to improve roads, too many people complain about the roadworks.
