I thought this was the case anyway? My brother was in the Paras and he was told not to wear his uniform off site?

Makes perfect sense not to wear uniform off site to me -- when a large percentage of the country feel we are involved in an illegal war it is only likely to cause trouble.
I dont agree with the war- but I do respect the fact that the service men and women are just doing their job.... these people abusing them should really take a ride to westminster and abuse the people who voted for them to go to war.

I can see the point being made but i disagree with it. mechanics (in overalls), nurses, shop assitances etc all walk about when "off duty" the streets going about their everyday business. i dont see why those in the military are refused this, particulary as they serve their country and do a job many would not be able to do. these are highly trained professionals and agree with the PM that its a depressing situation.
I'm not saying that they have the right to the city (ironically though the station was granted freedom) but they are no different to any other job. The police uniform is much more "threatening" imo to the public and understand why this should not be worn off duty - no one can relax with a copper about, but the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of our forces have no power, authority or control over the general public (unless they breech the parimeter fence- even then they are taken in and handed to civil police) so shouldnt be seen as a "authority" figures.

I agree with Fonz on this one, Military personnal put thier own lives at risk to serve this not-so-great country and there is no need to abuse them in the streets

members of our military are heroes, and deserved to recognised on the street and have their hand shook for their efforts. no matter what people think about the conflicts we are involved in, these people willingly offer their lives to their country, and they should be respected for it. this country is too PC it makes me so angry sometimes, i plan to join the armed forces after university because i feel it is not only an interesting job but is a worthwhile cause protecting the country that has given me so much opportunity.

part of the problem is how the armyis perceived when out there, they assume all of them are like those american idiots who through the puppy off the cliff, and all the crap you see in the papers about pow's being abused etc.
its mostly the medias fault
