sound electric? If anyone has seen the new Snoop Dogg videa Sensual Seduction hes using one of them in that, I think they were used alot back in the day, it kind of alters your voice so that when you move up and down in tone it makes sound a bit electronic?
I know this is completly ramdon but we were talking about them last night after watching the mentioned video and reckon they could be good fun lol

Cheers

it's called a > Vocoder < - decent hardware ones are anything between £200-1000+. You can get VST plugins, like Orange Vocoder for use in multitrackers/sequencers(cubase/protools/nuendo/FL etc).

edit - good vid, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hqvvNcvenU

another good video of a vocoder - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkKm7VydYfU

Theres also a talk box (example is Bon Jovi - Livin' on a Prayer), but it's completly different in how it works.

no worries, is pretty cool stuff - as you can see hardware is quite expensive, and although software is cheaper (IE: stuff can be had for free), to make it near real time you have to spend a a little on the DAW card (soundcard, something like an m-audio or digidesign card - anthing between £120-3000+).

But theres a lot of synths around that have ok(ish) vocoders built in - like that analog vintage Roland VP-330 (vid above) or the Korg microkorg.

Theres also harmonising, listen to imogen heap - hide & seek - again this works different to a vocoder or talk box, but produces similar effects.
One imogen uses is a > DigiTech <, again not cheap if you can find one.

yeah, a talk box is basically a sound (usually a guitar) fed from a mini speaker via a tube into your mouth. Mouth movements cause the different pitches.
The only problem is that a talk box's can shatter teeth, if you're not careful but there pretty good fun.

Oh and a harmoniser, takes the input signal and pitches it based on a midi input from a controller (keyboard etc). So you play a chord and the input signal (usually a feed from a mic) will be pitched to the notes played.
