Earlier on this evening i was in the car park when i got approached by this girl asking if i had any jump leads. i did, so i hooked them up to her car cos it wudnt start, connected the leads and started the engine. smoke then came from the grips on the leads. Before even a minute had gone they started smoking quite bad, pulled one off her car and the metal grip was on fire!!! blew it out and realised i had connected the batterys up in a circuit. after realising i put them on the right way and left my car running to try and charge her battery. after like 10 mins her car wudnt even turn the starter motor. all i managed to get was a cpl of lights on the dash. eventually gave up and she called breakdown service etc etc. she had a fiesta, 51 plate. I was thinking later on, cud it have been the immobiliser???? or something else?? cos i dont want to be plumped with a garage bill for the cross wiring. any thoughts anybody????

What do you mean by that? You say you connected them the wrong way around, like + on yours to - on hers and vice versa?

off topic..sort of, my mate once dropped a penny in his cigarette lighter in his golf, it sparked and shorted everything..leaving him needing a new loom as it shorted everything a fried practically every wire, but as for your problem im not sure m8.

Ok then, to be honest there will probably be damage to her car.
Alternator is usually the first thing to give up but I dont know a lot about fords so i cant really say but there can be other damage done
You might have been lucky and just burnt your jump lead out though so her battery died and it stopped turning over because it wasnt connected to yours any more (because the clip was fecked)

even though both my battery and her battery were smoking a little bit (connectors), mine was fine. started up no problem. so im reli not sure wha was wrong with it. but the fact that the jump cable caught on fire has got me worried.

Yeah yours will most likely be ok because the massive current that flowed came from your battery and your alternator.
Her battery was flat so yours forced all her electrics to be connected in reverse. Seen it done on a corsa and the only casualty was the alternator

Yup, in todays world you don't want to be found liable for something even though you were just trying to help!

i tryed push starts. and thinking about it, it was prob only smoking cos of the heat coming from wiring it up wrong and the heat was playing with the jelly they put on the terminals, and then when i pulled the grip off, it sparked and the jelly on the actual grip catches fire. so i wud assume that no damage wud occur to the car cos when i re-attached the wires the right way and tryed to start the fiesta, all the lights on the dash came on properly, it just didnt start. and there was no random burnt plastic smell from under the bonnet, so i think im ok. i mite pop in and see if she got it working, just to make sure. cant hurt can it.

jump leads can proper burn out the wiring loom, hence why i dont carry jump leads anymore, tbh she asked you or jump leads so she cant charge you or do anything, if she calls you tell her to gtf
