I changed from a Mini Cooper S works to an MG to save myself some money on running costs, mainly petrol with the pence per litre rising and it seems to be no better

After a quick search on google most urban figures are coming out at 31mpg

Ouch. Always worth doing your homework before making the decision.
Has the Rover been serviced lately. You may see a tiny improvement with a well serviced engine.

Main reasons will probably be:
1. Old engine design dating back to tthe early 90's I believe
2. Quite a big car for the engine size so it'll be working harder than if it was in a smaller car
3. I imagine the ZR will have a short ratio gearbox like my old 1.4 corsa did. I can get 30-32mpg out of a tank in my VXR, yet in my corsa I could only manage late 30's! The 4th gear in the astra is about the same as 5th was in the corsa, so once moving I always try and keep to the high gears and it seems to be pretty good on fuel.

Yer my mates focus has very long ratios (like you say, 4th is like 5th in my corsa) he tends to do about 80 at 3 and a ikkle bit k rpm Where was thats about 65 for me! His car is better on fuel than mine as its massive with a bigger engine
