you are right with wondering when to change gear.
i always find that 4200 rpm is the best time to change gear in my 1.2 8v when going from 3rd to 4th gear on full throttle.

what am i talking about

How long does it take to get to a high enough speed to go into 4th .

Go further than 5 gregg, I use to take it to 6.5 ish then change

Only wall to tell the exact point for your car wouyld be to get it on the rollers and look at the bhp/torque readings

As its an 8v it will be more torqey then rev happy so about 5k sounds right. Should be able to feel when its dying off

I normaly try and change before 3k in every gear but if im giving it some normaly just take it to about 5
