im just finishing year 11 and wanting to do catering at college for two years. my cousins a chef for rick stein so i know id have a good teacher (however he lives 170 miles away)! whats the career like. (and the pay lol) thanks

pays shit - unless ur somewere real good
unsocialbe working hours

i did it at college and a full time job, dident enjoy it enough in the long run to work full time and quit cheffing after a few months of full time work after college

as said above its real hard work, and youa need to really enjoy cooking and have a passion for food

Little brother does it and he loves it though in charge of his own kicthen in a little country pub, always busy but has free reins of what to cook as the owners do not take an active role.

But he does have to work friday, saturdays and sunday without fail has a wedendays and Thursday off I think

Very very hard work, for the pay you get, shit hours if it's a restaurant you work in.

My mate was the chef in Loch Fyne Oysters, worked his way up quite quickly he is on £500 a week plus tips after tax, he says its a rewarding job

I can imagine it being hard work, but totally rewarding. You have to be quite driven to want to be the best, otherwise you'll spend th rest of your days cooking us our two-for-one meals at the meets

I was when I first left school, did my qualifications and worked all round the UK, it takes years to get to a good position so its not an easy job to get straight to the top in.

I ended up getting sick of it, not the actuall job but the long late hours and its very hard in certain places, in one of my last restaraunts (2 AA rossettes) we were often doing 16-18 hour shifts 3 days in a row over weekends and often starting at 6am and finishing at 12-1 am.

money is good if you stick at it (I was on around £25-28k and had all living expenses and food bills covered as it was a 'live-in' position)

would I do it if I could start over again? Definitely.
