I have just had a 'discussion' with a housemate of mine who owns a Daewoo Lanos.
She decided to tell me she thinks her car is better value for money than mine, as she spent £600 buying it over a year ago and since then has spent about £400-500 repairing it when it breaks.
I paid £1100 for my car, but since then have probably spent approximately £2000 on it, with only about £500 of that being neccessary income, ie. repairs or regular servicing (which hers doesn't get anyway).
She then said hers is better value as its cheaper and works, where as mine doesn't run properly at the moment due to the cat collapsing.
She seemed to forget that hers has had a full exhaust system (including cat after hers collapsed, meaning hers wouldn't run correctly either) and a new coilpack, and IMO has been more unreliable than mine.
Also, when I checked the oil for her about 6 months ago, I could only just remove the dipstick, the engine was that full of sludge. I asked her when it had last been serviced or had the oil changed, she said she didn't know - hence the reason it was cheap I suppose, but she didn't check it over at all!
I told her my car was my hobby, and therefore the money I have spent on it I enjoy, plus with most of the parts I can recoup some costs should I decide to split, but she maintains hers is better value.
What are your opinions on the matter, would you say she is right, or that if my car is worth it is purely a matter of my opinion, and when the cat is working again, will be a much better all round car - faster, better handling, better braking, more economical etc.
sorry for the essay, she just really got to me!

Of course she is wrong. 1) she is a woman 2) based on what you've written, she is wrong.
And the fact you're car is your hobby proves your point.
Does she have a hobby? Does she buy expensive shoes or bags? If she does, claim your £9.99 bag from Burton's is better value than her £100 leather bag, because it cost less and does the same job.

She loves F1 - at autosport this year, she bought 'a bit of a Jordan' that was on Trulli's car 'at some point between 1999 ans 2001'
Its a fucking triangle of carbon, painted yellow on one side - £25!
Robin, thats true - especially as its the 1.4 8v engine, although tbf, thats probably the only reason its still running cos they are bulletproof

Storm in the room and point your finger right in her face and say "You're wrong, that's it". And with that turn around, and slam the door with all you have.

I think you're on par for value. You've spent more but also I would be prepared to do that to have your car over hers.
I think if she had bought the car and it had been trouble free, perhaps that is value. I think if you had wasted money then perhaps yours is not.
You're both not in that position, so I don't know on what authority she is considers herself to be in running a car that breaks.

I think my last corsa was pretty damn good value for money. I paid 1900 for it, then did 13000 miles in just over 12 months, only replacing the rocker cover gasket, inlet gasket, handbrake cable and rear wheel bearing and a couple of services along the way, which probably came to around £150 or so.

Just tell her, even if it is better value for money, you wouldn't be seen dead driving that shitter of hers. Then ask did it come with a free paper bag

She also seems to think it 'sounded like a ferrari' when the cat packed in - IMO, it sounded like a very high pitched, slightly strangled cat.
Mike - tbf, she's not exactly a looker anyway, maybe he should have offered two bags for other road users safety.

Yea, that is value.
Unless she can find somebody like her, who just wants a cheap car and doesnt give a shit of its condition, she will never sell it.
and there is not a chance it will make much money at all - from what I remember, I don't think it has had any kind of service for about 25k
So she paid for an oil change

Depends if you care,
I spend a lot of money on my cars, better than sniffing it away buying coke.
Im sure she spends money on make-up, your face is better value for money than hers. (unless you wear make up?)

As far as her money goes, she does smoke about 20 a day

She's not really well placed to tell you about value by all accounts.
