I've been a PAYG customer for years. It has worked out cheaper, as I never used to use my phone much. Been using it more because I now have friends and once I used my free texts and minutes, I was paying nearly £30/month.
This week I decided to go Pay Monthly, but to make sure I could afford it I went on a SIM Only deal (i.e. £25 coming out of my account in one lump sum, rather than £10 here and there), because you can cancel after 30 days, not 1.5 years
I called up on Monday 21st, signed up and got the SIM sent out and it arrived on the 22nd. I then phone up to get my numbers changed over, so my phone was out of action until today (23rd). And guess what, the billing date was 21st to 22nd.
So for 1 day (in which I got 19 free minutes and 32 texts) I got charged £25, a whole months charge. I am now in the next monthly period, so have 600 minutes and unlimited any network texts. And come 22nd February, I'll get my new bill, which, will be £25.
I tried to sort of make a complaint on the phone, after double checking that I got my head around it, and I was right. But she said that you are charged one month in advance. I said on the phone "So it's basically a way of companies swindelling money out of people?" she laughed and said "Yeah" ever so faintly, then said "Thank you for calling 02" and pretty much put the phone down.
Bloody scammers.

That's what they all do Deano. It's a month in advanced, and usually on a pro-rata basis where necessary. Usually to get another payment out of you before you cancel

Aye - I did think of complaining, then realised that it was probably in the Terms and Conditions I 'read'.
It just struct me as bizarre, how they can charge £25, for 1 day, but give you 1 days free allowance. It should be either £25 with the full allowance for the period OR 1 days allowance and 1 days tariff.
You have to give 30 days notice, in writing. So yes, chances are by the time the letter has been acted upon, you'll be into the next period

They charge the first month at the start. They did that with mine, and it had the same day at the start. I think the day's just on there to put the charge against.

Yeah, so if you cancel it and give your 30 days they wont bill you again.
i.e 18month contract, pay a month in advance evey month except the 18th month which will be free.

So it's effectively Pay As You Go, not Pay Monthly
