Do they flash at you?
Was doing 40 thought id just get through on amber but it changed to red a split second before i went through, it would of been a bit dangerous to stop as cars behind so i thought ill just try for amber 
So do they flash if youve been caught ?

you may have been caught speeding though too now as they have speed cameras on some of the red light cameras as well now in my area

They normally allow a little bit of time i think before you're caught

I got flashed by one last year, nothing ever came of it
they do flash at you, the ones that get you speeding still have to have the lines on the floor

They normlly flash, well ones around here do. its not a little flash either its like lightning

 If it had turned red a split second before you crossed it, you could of stopped safely without troubling the cars behind you assuming you really was doing 40mph

Yeh, was gonna say, they are timed so that you will have seen it go to orange and had plenty of time to stop (since cars behind would also be expecting you to stop).
Either way, some traffic lights can catch you, some can't, depends on the camera.
