that time of life where we're forced to make a decision that will completely alter the way in which we live, and therefore enjoy, our lives... being forced to choose Uni or not... what uni.... what course at uni... etc
bein one of those people who doesnt really excel at anything... barely passing (if at all) my a levels... and being forced to look at uni's and have a personal statement sorted by tomorrow before i go round to all my teachers (who by the way sorta dislike me) to get references and THEN going to the head of my sixth form to ask for her reference (she really hates me more than life itself) WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!!

If you dont want to go then dont go - you wont complete it if you dont want to be there, atleast not to any great level where it'll of been worth while.
Go and get on the job ladder at a lower lever, and in 3-4yrs when people are joining from Uni's you'll have a lot more experience and nearly as much knowledge.

Uni will change your life.
1st year will be a drunken blur having some of the best times of your life
2nd year will be a bit of drinking and abit of working and you typically live in a house not student accomodation so you learn about bills etc
3rd year is hard work but its fun when you really get down into it! And there are still a few drunken nights out
Im living with 3 other lads and its mint, seriously have NO regrets about coming to uni. Learnt alot and have matured alot as a person

I've been at uni about 3 1/2 years an I felt I've picked a fair amount up and enjoyed the uni life along the way!
If i were you however, I'd consider doing a gap year and earning some money if you want to go to uni. I wish I had, because I've been skint for the past 3 years or so! Uni isn't for everyone though, so don't see it as the only option. I know what 6th form is like. They push uni like its the best thing since sliced bread, when sometimes depending on your chosen career path it isn't the best place to go.

this thread kinda reminds me of how i feel atm, i just dont know what to do with my life, went though high school with good grades etc then went to my schools 6th form and it all crashed and burned from there basically, work went downhill and i just always found 'better' things to be doing and then i started driving and well that was the end of that ha ha
ime contemplating atm doing another year of college, get better grades and then go to uni but i just dont know yet

Some companies will choose experience over qualifications.
I.E in a professional company, what would you choose?
Student dosser, no professional skills, but has a degree, and a beer gut.
Professional younger person with 3-4 years relevent experience.
Getting that first job as well is a nightmare.
I didn't do a degree, didn't see the point. And as many people have done here, you can always home study a degree later in life if you need it to get into a top kind of position.
Otherwise, relevent experience and recognised qualifications in that field can be much better than a degree and time can be better used on that.
If i was going to do it all again, i'd come out of school, then enroll myself in all the customised courses relevent to what I wanted to do.

true, lack of experience in the workplace is a big downside to the uni route, but quite a lot of courses are offering sandwich courses now, such as mine. Its well worth doing because it makes you realise where to apply what you've learnt over the previous 2 years and if your lucky you can secure a job for when you finish.
It all depends what you want to do, but uni is the quickest route to chartered status for me, which i'm hoping for in a few years time...

The only way I could gain any qualification or membership to the proffessional bodies for my line of work was to go to uni; all of the future relevant experience is built on the foundations that my course gave me; but I could not have gained the experience any other way.
In my case essentially without qualification, I wouldn't have got experience to do what I now do. My course was intensive 30+ hours in uni per week, no days off, and 20+ hours externally. I couldn't lead a "normal" student life of drinking and clubbing etc; I had to knuckle down especially in year 3/4.
However now I'm a fully trained Naval Architect; I head the Design/Naval Architecture department and came out of uni on a starting wage of £25k which has now gone up considerably after only 12 months in the job. I'm a member of the Royal Institute of Naval Architect which you can only be by gaining the degree and moves me towards chartered engineer status.
Basically, I am a contradiction of Daimo's (VXR's) opinion. I wouldn't be in the position I am now without going to uni.

dont feel forced, my parents pushed me into 6th form, i was there 2/3 months then i dropped out to go and work
my brothers at uni now and is contemplating leaving every week or so
think about what you enjoy, if you could see yourself doing it to earn a living, then go get some careers advice

Live Lee - Yeah, totally agree. Some jobs NEED that kind of qaulifications and specific courses are the only place to learn.
But for monkies like me who do crappy 9-5 office jobs, there are other ways around things.
But it totally depends what you want to do in life. Besides, at that age I didn't know what I want to do.
Mind you, 10 years later, nothings changed
