1 Give two examples of calculations which illustrate how calculation in the wrong order (i.e. not using BODMAS/BIDMAS/PEMDAS) will give an incorrect answer.

2 An express delivery company is to deliver a vital component having a length of 0.005447 m to a location which is 62500 m from their distribution point. Express both of these measurements in Engineering form and then replace the power of 10 by the appropriate SI prefixes.

3. The densities of three different types of material used in building (in kilograms per cubic metre) are expressed in scientific notation as
(i) 3.521~103 (ii) 9.307~102 (iii) 1.420~104
Rewrite these figures in normal mode.
(9 marks)
4. Approximate the following numbers to two significant figures and then rewrite the answers in scientific notation
(i) 0.00003124 (ii) − 2156.4 (iii) − 0.00175
(9 marks)
5. The dimensions of a rectangular tank are quoted as follows
Length = 5.7144 m, Width= 3.2786 m, Height= 1.8572 m
For each measurement state, explaining your reasoning, what would be a
sensible number of decimal places to use and approximate the given figure to that number of decimal places. Calculate the volume, and give the answer to an appropriate number of significant figures. Explain the reasoning behind the number of significant figures that you have used.

6 A new town is planned to occupy an area of 4000 Hectares . The land is to be divided between residential accommodation, business development, retailing and park land in the ratio 6:4:2:1. Calculate the area which will be allocated to each type of land use.

7 Results of a survey in connection with a proposed new airport show that noise considerations would allow on average 10.2 aircraft per hour to take off during the night and 26.4 per hour during the day. Using a weighting of 2:5 for night and day, calculate an overall weighted average of the number of aircraft that could take off per hour.

8 The ground plan of a factory site has dimensions as shown below.
Calculate all the dimensions of a scale drawing on the scale of
1 cm = 5 metres. Give your answers to a sensible degree of precision.
175.6 m
76.9 m 85.4 m
152.3 m

9 Use the power laws to express each of the following as a single power with no fraction. Where appropriate give a numerical answer to 3 significant figures.
(i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (vi)

10 A cylindrical silo is to be designed with a volume of 450 m3. The silo, which
stands with its circular face to the ground, must fit into a space which has ` a width of 9.8 m. The formula for the volume, V, of a cylinder is V=Īr2L
where r is the radius and L the length of the cylinder. Calculate the minimum height that the silo could be.
