hes had a porsche and a honda s2k, so nothing like a vauxhall etc really.

I'd agree and say Boxster and S2K best two for around 12k. 350z is nice but you won't find one for that budget.

would definately get a Z3/3 series or merc SLK/CLK for that money, all depends on how new it has to be

might get a 51 reg Z3 for that money

Just looking on the trader, convertibles 10k - 12k less than 3 years old.
Chose by engine size first. Biggest are 4 litre Jeep Wranglers. Come down to 2-2.5 litre and you get PT Cruisers, Pug 206 and 307, Freelander, Astra, Megane, MX-5, Alfa Spider, Saab 9-3, Beetle and Volvo C70.
There's a 56 plate CLK up at £11k which I would assume is a mistake if you go below 2 litre. Then MR2 and more Astras and Tigras.
I think he needs to lower his sights or spend more!
