Right my GF needs a new car soon and I have the chance to get hold of:
Fiat Punto HLX (top spec I think) 1.9 JTD
Y reg, 128k miles, silver, 5 door.
It has full service history and wont have ever been driven hard.
The guy is just after an easy sale so I could get it for a good price.
I want peoples honest opinions on these cars. Has it reached the end of its life with that mileage? How reliable are they? I have never liked Fiats but are they fairly decent cars?
What is the going rate for the car? Whats the trade price?
Or would it be worth saving up more to get a Polo or something?

Well there is no set budget TBH.
Wouldnt be much more than 2k though.
Only reason she would be buying now rather than a 6 months time would be if the price was right. So what would the car be valued at trade price and private sale price?
I know they had a bad rep but have they improved?

128K on a not particually well known diesel is a bit questionable, but i've nevr had any MAJOR problems with a fiat - silly rattly trim, things poping off that pop back on again, but they arent as bad as people make out.

Im hoping someone on here might be a member on a fiat site so they could either post up for me or know about common faults etc.
Really not too sure about how good they are. Esp at that age

My friend has the 1.9JTD Stilo
The JTD engine is excellent, very reliable, and it's quick.
It gets amazing MPG too, hers is an 03 plate and it gets better MPG (55mpg+) than her fella's Golf TDI which is newer.
The seats in the stilo are very comfortable (prob same in punto??) but the inside doesnt feel its the most well made, i.e. vibration in the dash when stereo is on etc

The 1.9JTD they put in the stilo is a common rail unit though, most with 115bhp. The 1.9 JTD in the 2001 punto is not a common rail unit and only produces 80bhp. Quick it wont be, but it should do decent MPG i suppose, though non common rail units tend to produce more of that horrible diesel sound.

u2u kurt on here he might be able to give you, a few answers he works for parts in fiat.
fiat desiels are normaly strong engine, its the gearboxes, interior trim etc that can feel cheap and that.
if you service it and look after it i dont see why it would go wrong.

Had a punto 1.9 jtd 2001 y plate, its deffo a common rail diesel , great engines and raerly go wrong, rest of the car is ok( odd rattle, squeek...etc)
And about reliability i worked for fiat for many years and can honestly say we very rarely saw any of the diesel cars in for repair!!
(now working at volkswagon and cant say the same for the vag diesels).
