I'm 18, Im a 3rd year apprentice partsman for a large company.
my wages have been:
1st year 5200 before tax £2.50 an hour
2nd year 7280 before tax £3.50 an hour
3rd year 11960 before tax £5.00 an hour
I used work beside 2 other partsmen and a parts manager but about 8 weeks ago I got a promotion and now I work at our other branch and I run my own parts dept. while I enjoy it there is a hell of a lot more work and more managerial tasks to be done. when I moved up here I didnt get a payrise
my other point is that I started here in Aug '05 and it was supposed to be a 4 year apprenticeship but I am doing my final tests on friday to qualify early.
I'm going to be asking for a wage rise next week once I'v qualified. my question is how much should I be asking???
Cheers

Ask for a rise when you pass your exams.
But the minimum wage for 18- 21 year olds is less than £5.00/hour, so think yourself lucky

monday - friday 8 - 5, half an hour lunch
saturday - 8 - 12, no lunch.
I doubt I'll ever see 20k in this job tbh even though its a hell of a lot of work to keep the dept going smoothly.
Deano, iv been through the shit wage I feel its time to get a bit of a reward for my work.
also, Im goni wait til I pass the exams so I have, hopefully more to bargain with

There is no harm in asking, just don't be too pushy. If the exams you're doing are industry recognised, start looking for new jobs may be?!

exactly mate, there are 2 levels you can do to be a parts man, NVQ level 2 and 3. 3 being the best, thats what qualification I will have come friday
not saying this to be big headed but I'm shit hot at my job and a lot of garages know that so if they (bosses) dont wanna up my wages then I may try and find another job.

Fair play. If you're that good (and by the sounds of it you are, because you're running your own department and not even qualified) then you should be able to get another job somewhere.

thats nothing bud
i was a vuaxhall apprentice
1st yer was, £3.00 p/h
2nd year was £3.00 p/h
argued for 6months and got a wage rise as legally they werent paying me enough so
3rd year £4.45 p/h
got fully trained to silver award within the vauxhall aprentiship system.
no wage rise, got told after 1 years expierience in the workshop ontop of the 3 1/2 years i'd already done, i'd be offered £5.00 p/h
I walked, No way is a gold status mechanic only worth £5.00 p/h which is what i would of been had i stayed for that last year

This is how the majority of these car manufacturers, and 'franchise' dealerships make money. They charge £50+/hour for even the most basic jobs (like an interim oil change) yet get apprentice mechanics to do it, on £5/hour.

Id rather suck cock for £5 an hour then do that. no wonder a lot of young people choose not to work and fleece the benefit system.
