Following the recent appearance of numerous supplement threads I got thinking...

Can any of you bodybuilding types/gym-goers recommend tried and tested performance supps that you have had positive experiences with? The reason I ask is because a few months ago I started with tribulus and testo booster type things (a load of shite by the way) and didn't really see any dramatic effect as advertised.

The only supplements I have seen good results from are Creatine, Taurine and L-Glutamine. I find these to be very good when utilized pre and post workout.

By the way I'm not talking about meal-replacement type powders like whey and oats, just other supps like amino acids and creatine.

So, any good/bad experiences?

If your only just starting you dont need any supplements bar whey powder, its a waste of money as you need to nail a diet/workout 100% before supplementing otherwise they do naff all except eat away your money.

Creatine/CEE is good but remember it increases water retention, you need to drink lots of water with it.

I take Glutamine, Whey and Cassein Whey thats it at the moment. You can take BCAA's but like i said it all depends on your level.

If you expect to get dramatic effects as advertised, you'll always be dissapointed.

IMO the most important supplement (apart from protein powders) is Glutamine.

i think CNP is an excellent company. Expensive, but i'm currently using Pro-Peptide (best protein supplement around imo), Pro-GF pre workout, Pro-Recover post workout and i use Pro-Glutamine in certain shakes.

My diet is spot on, i only use these products to supplement it.

Cheers for the reply Adz.

I'd class myself as beginner-intermediate at the moment to be honest. Although I've been training since I was 16 (I'm now 19) I've only began to get my diet right over the last 12 months but I've seen big gains in this short time.

Been taking L-Glutamine, Creatine and Taurine pre-workout and noticed that I'm much more focused in my workouts. I don't ache half as much too with the Glutamine. I'd recommend them all.

I may try BCAA's as just noticed myprotein stock it. What about some of the non-essential amino acids? Have you ever used stuff like Beta Alanine Adz?

mattk: Yeah Optimum 100% is good stuff, tastes nice but I find Myprotein's stuff just as effective at a lower price.

Craig: I've heard about Pro-peptide and was going to give it ago. Where's the cheapest supplier? I've tried to get my diet spot on the last few months and it seems to be paying off. Eating all this chicken, tuna and oats is bleeding expensive though. I think I'll have to start shopping at Netto.

lol Just realised how much of a rip off my gym is for supps. They charge £35 for the 908g tub. Think I'll order some of that Craig. Is this as a replacement for Whey or in addition to?

Buy 10 or more 908g's and get them for £18.77 each

I multi buy the 2270g.

Pro-Peptide is the only protein supplement i use at present. I would usually have whey post workout but use Pro-Recover instead.

I used to use 100% optimum whey twice daily but now spend that money on 5 chicken breasts every weekend, one daily in the week, along with a tin of tuna daily, in between my normal meals

Never mate, used BCAAs before, and used a bit of creatine, but stopped the crea as i started a cut, so stopped the usage.

At the moment all i use is multivitamins, whey/cassein protein, glutamine, flaxseed oil caps and fishoil caps.

Brabus i don't want to urinate on your fire but you need more than 1 chicken breast and 1 tin of tuna a day if you want to grow. I'm assuming your 'normal' meals dont contain anything in the way of protein?

Not really as with my normal meals aswel, usually consisting of, oats/porriage/banana for breakfast, jacket with prawn/colslaw(sp) or beans for dinner at work and ususally large home cooked tea(ie sunday dinner/curry/chillie) as well as chicken breast and tuna between these meals, this is 1.5x my body weight in pounds in grams of protien. Bearing in mind im short and weigh approx 70kgs.

So that lot is 1.5x your weight in pounds? You're 70kg so approx 154lbs. You're telling me that what you listed is 231g of protein? Bearing in mind a chicken breast is approx 22g protein (100g).

Brabus, yeah sounds like you're getting enough protein providing the protein content of your cooked tea and how much tuna you're eating. Surpisingly, there's only about 30% protein in tuna (think I read that on here somewhere.)

I try and make sure I eat at least 300g of chicken breast a day. Along with 2-3 whey shakes, tuna, eggs, nuts and low fat cottage cheese.
