hey there bit of a newbie i'm afraid!!
the wife being the best driver she is and after numerous telling off's about driving to close has rear ended someone!!
apaprently he had a quote of 500 quid to replace the bumer and a strengthening beam behind it?? is he telling the truth becaue i have found abumper for 30 quid and never heard of a beam behind a bumper, i just thought that the crumple zone was directly into the body anyways does anyone know if he is telling thr truth or is it worth just getting the bumper done and getting it sprayed??
cheers

Most cars have an impact bar behind the rear bumper.

Almost all bumpers have beams behind them, and as Ben said, he is well within his rights to have brand new parts, from the manufacturer, painted and fitted by the manufacturer if he so wishes.

Something like this (I know it's not an 07, but you get the idea)

Rather than this

£500 sounds about right to replace the beam, bumper and paint and fit it, using genuine parts.

£500 would be cheap,
New genuine bumper
New genuine crash bar
Paint
Spray
Fit
Exhaust could also be knocked, bent back

Somebody left the handbrake off on their land rover and cracked my 350z bumper - iirc it was about 750-850 plus vat, fitting and labour. If someone hit me I'd want it done at the best place with genuine parts so wtf should he have something for £30?!

the bumper is a breakers one so its genuine and i agree with the tailgater point to.
just shows how crap modern cars are mine came away with nothing but a scratch!
ok so he might be telling the truth about the bumper beam. but would it bend if the paint on the bumper isn't cracked??

Modern cars are designed to crumple the crash bar/beam etc to protect driver/passengers and the actual structual part of the vehicle. Your saying you'd rather crash an older car? I know I'd chose modern everytime!

your missing the point mate, he should be able to get one straight from vauxhall ford etc.
new car's bumpers etc are designed to crumble in an accident.

Its genuine, but not new, so I would refuse it to be honest.
And the bar could easily bend - the bumper is designed to pop back into shape, so that could look fine but be bent as well.

Fact is, he could go through the insurance and claim whiplash to boot. I'd hand over the cash and be done with it, and give your mrs a slapped ass.

My friends Clio was hit at about 5 or 6 mph by the Almera behind us.
Smashed the bumper, bent the boot and dented the boot floor of the Clio.
Almera got away without a mark on it.
