depends on the engine, Ph1's are slighty quicker, as in if you notice you need to get out more, but generaly the BHP on the renaultsport engines can differ from car to car and IMO this makes more of a difference.
If your gonig to track it it might be worth considering the Cup, which were ph2 but cost lest to buy when new.
on the top gear track it holds it own aginst some decent machines

Watch if the cam belts been done as its a 6+ hour job and needs doing about 60k or 5 years (so now if it hasnt had one)
Also they absolutly cain frout tyres, but thats part of the fun

Phase 1's are known as the phase quick as they have none of the weigh downs as the Ful fat phase 2 172's
Just a remap full exhaust and a set of billet cams, and a maxogen intake and your nudging at 200 bhp
With a set of H&R coilovers set up by Mark Fish and the mods above you'll be laughing on the track.
The key is not to tune the fuck out of it as the car is well balanced. After talking to Brad Fincham he was telling me about a turbo'd 182 getting slayed by the 172 cup with slight breathing mods proves this point.
Sam (fear) just bought a phase 1 with a GDI package worth over 3.5k on it and is currently running over 200 bhp. There is no doubt this is a quick car for the money!!
There are many tuned up examples that come up from time to time so these tend to be the best buys.

TBH i cant give an acurrate comparison as the Ph1 as fad says is quite highly tuned and so in a different league to the ph2!
When i was originally looking for my ph2 i went for it because of the looks and interior, theres no denying it looks abit more up to date but i wouldnt say better now i have the 2 together, i think the ph1 has more stance and character!
You do notice the difference in interior as it is abit more dated due to colours, BUT im guessing as a track car there wont be alot left!
If i keep mine for any length of time im gonna look at a few track days possible and strip out the rear as i can see it being abit quick on a track!
With the breathing mods and omex management ive got once you hit 4k it flies, standard it really kicks abit later at nearly 5k!
Handling wise there are pretty sorted already and even just a set of eibachs would do you well, but as fad said abouve H&R coilies it seems are the boys to go for for track!
If it was me then the Ph1 ticks all your boxes with teh cup getting abit of a look in, but if it is going to be MAINLY a track car, then i dont see the point in the extra expense!

the phase 1's seme to be becomign very popular little track day cars, pretty affordable as well!
Id consider a Ph 1 Cup for a track day car tbh

if tis for track days etc then get the phase 1, strip it out buckets etc, then you already have cable throttle for throttle bodies etc.... spend some more money on brakes and suspension and you'll be laughing.
awesome cars.
as for the phase 1 being faster than a phase 2, maybe faster than a full fat but the phase 2 cup i have has had a few challenges from a phase 1 and never noticed a difference
