I have a current Plus account with Natwest, the persuaded me to upgrade to Advantage gold but changed it back after i found out they charge you monthly for it Ive been with them for around 6-7years and have always had a Solo card.
I noticed the Mrs was with them and has a Meastro card, so went in to ask for one and they basically said 'computer says no'
Is this based on your credit history or somthing, i dont have an overdraft and dont want one and my credit history is good as far as im aware.

How old are you?
I went a few years back to pay money in using my Solo card (was about 19 I think) and the woman told me that I should have a Meastro card by now as Solo is upto 16 or 18yrs old (or something like that). So she just ordered me a new card and it came through.

A Maestro card with Natwest is standard? It is your debit card? I am with them and have that one

So it does go on your credit rating? Mine should be good, although i went overdrawn by 50p or somthing 3months ago, dont know if that will affect it.

going overdrawn once wont make a difference It'll effect his credit rating one little bit but not by a huge amount at all.

It's the same in Barclays and other banks. They often has VisaConnect, which is like standard Visa, but not with overdraft facility, or the ability to go overdrawn - your card will just decline. Generally used for lower incomes or bad credit rating.
My girlfriend also applied for a bank account in Barclays, nothing fancy. She was declined. But undoubtedly has a bad credit rating due to going overdrawn by direct debits then getting owned by bank charges.

Cash is better when going on spending sprees anyway. You can keep tabs on what you've spent, and you aren't like to get conned by someone cloning your card.

still have to use the cashpoint to get the money out though unless you want to que up for ages, plus its not safe carrying lots of cash around imo.

I had a Maestro for years without any overdraft facility - so in that case is no different to a Solo. Its only in the last 6 months that Natwest contacted me and offered me the overdraft.
I would agree that the credit rating would come into account if it also meant you were automatically given an overdraft with a Maestro card, but your not.

I agree i dont see why credit rating should come into it at all, its like going from one of them kids cards where you can only withdraw £20 a day to a solo, they dont say 'no you cant do that your credit rating isnt good enough' when your 16

That's because the idea of a Solo is that you don't need a credit rating/good credit rating.

Why is this different for a Meastro?

HSBC won't let me have a Maestro card on my account no more as there computer SCREAMS no... and I'm 26...
So on that note, I got a Maestro card elsewhere, aswell as 2 Mastercards...
Go figure

Solo cards are pure debit card, they link directly to the account so wont let you go over in any way.
Switch/Maestro are different as they like a halfway house between a debit and a credit card, and any transaction £10 or below is guarenteed by the Maestro. I racked up £800 ON TOP of my overdraught limit because of the £10 guarentee thing a few years back, hence the bank not letting me have another.
