Starting a new job in a couple of weeks so i'll be doing about 120 miles a day, which means the MG has to go and I need to get myself a diesel.

Hoping to get about 4 grand for the MG, then after ive paid off the finance i'll have about 2 grand to spend.

Whats best to go for? Was thinking about a pugeot 306 hdi, something like that?

306 is a good choice, anything VAG although you wont get much for 2k

Look at an HDi, they are good engines
