The tiptronic is basically an auto, with manual override function iirc, and not very good.

1998/1999 is late E36 so quite possible - some confusion over the 3 speed-ness though.

Dad's E39 530i had this function. iirc, it didn't have gear 1 and 2 on the auto box like on old cars, so might be what he means by 3 speed.
