Don't even think about full sus unless your spending at least a grand.
The GT is ok, fairly basic set up but perfectly good for riding to work and light off road use

Exactly what I'd say when working in a bike shop
GT bike is essentially a Halfords bike, but for what you've described it for, it'll be pretty much perfect.
Cable pull discs aren't really much cop, but they'll be fine
Like a car, look after it, keep it maintained, it shouldn't go wrong too much. Abuse it, and don't expect it to last

you are a fool
GT bikes have only in the last few years been sold in halfords. the place that sells them does not make them a bad bike

Aye - The Hardrock would be a better buy.
I know that Halfords are the ones that sell them, but after GT went bust, they bought the rights to manufacture, the name, and shit like that. GT's aren't good bikes, trust me. Even if they are arguably 'good', there are better bikes out there for the same money, there are more brands in the biking world than GT.

I bought a mongoose tyax last year. Super bike, really light, shitty cable pull discs on it, but for the money you can't go wrong.
