Had BA training (breathing aparatus) through my work at Fire Headquarters..I am in the ERT team (emergency response)..

I have so much respect for these guys now after today, well more than i did have..

2 hrs in class room learning about the BA kit etc and how to service and put the BA kit together..Rest of day pratical ini the training buildings..

We got kitted out in Full fire fighting uniforms, helmets boots the lot....Then we had to service the BA and fit and test it on our self...

Then with the BA on we got lead through this building full of doors, stairs corridors etc just to see how much you actually use and what it feels like fully kitted up, damn it gets heavy and sweaty...

Next the complete building was put in darkness and in teams of 2 we got briefs on our missions, my team with me lead had to find and make safe a gas cylinder through this building in complete darkness,..We got trained how to lead ourselfs through the buildings in darkness and to find our way out using the left hand or right hand route method where you are constantly running the back of your hand up the wall cheking for doors etc, whilst stamping feet checking the floor and other hand sweeping over your body at all times to check for hanging obstacles....Was an expierence i can tell you, we got trained the exact way Fire fighters do..

Then the biulding was in complete darkness and filled with smoke you couldn't see anything, darkness and smoke totally disorientating...We got told a route and what to do to get in and out in this situation...

Crazy but i loved it, thought i wouldn't like the BA kits but once you get used to breathing in them your fine...

Sorry for the long post

Big to the fire service, got a little glimpse today of how they work and what to do in dark smoke filled buildings...

Now i am shattered, energy sapping day with Full fire uniform on and harness with full tank and BA kit, mask etc...

loved it...

I've done the same thing before, and assisting a fire safety instructor, it's great fun for a day, wouldn't want to do it as a job though.

Did you go through the 'rat run' cage thing? that's a pain in the arse with the BA on.
