Looking to buy a graphics card for my latest PC build...

Budget of around £120, but I was looking at getting a 8600GT and clokcing it a little...

Any other recommendations? Will be used for moderate gaming.

System spec...

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+
4GB 4-4-4-15 800mhz
PCI-E 16x slot

ive heard the 8600GT is a fairly poor for DX10 (dont have one so cant confirm). For £120 this wont buy you something great, but you could get a half decent DX9 card. My 1950GT works well on full detail in COD4 and can play Crysis demo at just under Max settings, and i think its now £100 at microdirect

Yeah I'd consider not going for a DX10 card and just going for a better quality DX9. Majority of games arent really making full use of DX10 anyway, so in the next 18months or so, while the next gen is being developed you could probably get away with one.

What about the X1950 PRO ? Only £90 Inc VAT.

I've got one in AGP and it's a great card. Plays COD4, Bioshock and crysis fine. (Although doesn't play Crysis on full as not many cards can at the moment)

Your going to be looking at either the ATi Radeon X1950XT (you can get this for around £120 now, so dont bother with the Pro). If you wanted to stretch the budget a little then look for a GeFoce 8800 GTS 320MB, this is DX10 so wont need to upgrade and offers a bit better performance than the XT.

For moderate gaming, the X1950 PRO (or XT) is far better value than a 8800 IMO.

but the fact the 8800GT is million times better..

i rest my case.

only plus is the price is cheap, but its such a shite card.. anyone with any ounce of intelligence would admit that Nvidia are at the moment ruling the gaming world for performance.. oh wait.. they are now, they were 2 years ago, 5 years ago.. wait they have always been better.. bar maybe 1 or 2 cards which were soon outperformed.

Yeah it is better I admit but abit expensive.

Also, prior to my X1950 PRO I had nothing but bother from my 6800gt so wouldn't touch nvidia. I sent it back for repair twice and even got a new one under warranty all of which failed within a couple of months.

Basically, get the 8800 if you're budget can stretch to it mate.

Ry.

the 8800 series cards are much better than the X1950 series, but they are also more expensive, so it really comes down to that.

The X1950GT is a good card, but it is only DX9 and you probably would want to upgrade in the future, whereas the 8800 you probably wouldnt for a while.

i think that it depends what company you buy your nvidia card from, if you stick to good makes like msi, asus, aopen, xfx etc

my 6800gt is a aopen and it has run flawlesly for 3 / 3.5 years, and my bro has a 8800GTS from xfx and that is a mental bit of kit.

I was gonna overclock the 8600GT to GTS spec.

I have an xbox 360 for gaming anyway...

It was just for FPS's. Needs to be a mouse and keyboard combo!

The 8600 is just really really underpowered. Only 32 stream processors compared to the 96 in the 8800 series.

It may be DX10 on the cheap, but performance is below the X1950GT.

if you are looking at getting a very cheap and fairly decent g/c then go for a 6800GT or ultra, they are still pretty decent and run alot of things smoothly, but it depends whether the game uses CPU or GPU as its main drive.

for example live for speed uses cpu where as nfss i would assume it would be entirely gpu

im definetly a ATi / AMD fanboi, but it seems all the nvidia cards (from w/e manufacturer) i get all end up in the bin 12 months down the line, whereas ive got a 9800XT somewhere in a cupboard that 'blew up' after being overclocked yet will still work if i called on it in an emergency even today

I've bought in 8600GT's for customers and they arent worth the cash in the slightest.

I'd definatly hang on 3/4 weeks and get an 8800GT when places are flooded with stock.

oh dont get me wrong, the ati will work if i stuck it in now, but i hate its console / control panel.. i think its confusing and doesnt give the options i want..

the nvidia for me always outperformed the ati.. and i dunno i think i like the design of nvidias website looks alot more professional.. now i know that makes fuck all difference. but it does give me a better overall feling... im sure some of you know what i mean

Ive got a PCI-express x1950 pro sapphire 512mb, and for a DX9 card, its fucking impressive. Money well spent, and clocks well too with some extra cooling, stock fan is not too bad either.

7900 GS is a good alternative to a 7600 GT.
