I'd imagine it would all be infrared sensors or something.

Some info about it there. I imagine it involves infra-red and lasers as Eckmcmann said.

its not quasar, they're used on automatic weapons because they need pressure in the barrel to cock the weapon again after the first round is fired. with blanks because of the lack of anything but gas coming out there isn't enough pressure to cock the weapon again, the blank adapters allow this.
they also reduce the effects of the gas flying out of the end of the barrel. in the cadets we were taught there could be a flame of anything up to 3 feet long when a blank is fired from an L98 (a single shot version of the SA80 that the cadets use) so the army don't want a load of soldiers having their faces blown off when in training, however because the L98 we used wasn't automatic so we never got the adapter which meant we could blow each other away all we wanted
see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blank-firing_adaptor
and on exercises theres no such thing as "being hit" its training you how to deal with certain situations, so the people leading the exercise decide when people are hit etc to create certain scenarios.

L98 is ace, i fird one loads in the cadets (amongst others) designed to stop a truck with a single round with distances upto 1 mile. and they give it kids to fire

they were loud fuckers on the range, i remember training at halton camp, the range was at the end of the football field. where people were firing from was literally about 10 metres from the goals at one end. playing football when people were shooting was madness, the people on the range had ear defenders and we had fuck all
i'll also never forget the first time i heard an LSW going off in the field. patrolling in the brecon beacons as a lowly 1 star with my 20 blanks and my L98 we wandered in front of an enemy position (because we weren't very good) and they had 2 of the fuckers and they weren't afraid to show it ahhhhhhhh good times
