Can anyone enlighten me with the order I must follow to remove the head bolts on my engine so I can remove the head? I'm under the impression that if I do it any old way I could risk fucking it up

the way haynes says to do it is to work anticlock wise (in a spiral that getting smaller) from the furthest bolt away from you if you are working form the exhaust side.

1/4 turn on all of them first, then 1/2 turn then undo them all the way

Reverse for putting it back on

edit.: the first bolt you undo should be at about 10 o'clock if your looknig at it form above. Top left hand corner

Yes there is an order for removal as well as fitting.
Its to stop the head warping.

remove the bolts in the correct order otherwise you will be left with all the tension on 1 bolt. do it in this order:

1 3 9 5 7
2 4 10 6 8

I did them from left to right on my engine and ended up having to put 2 back in so I could loosen the last 2

You should work in from the outside or opposite to torqueing down
but i'm with jr i just whip them all off and have never had a problem.

as long as they're 'cracked off' first there shouldnt be a problem,

just dont crack one and take it right out before the rest are done
