Basically, try Endsleigh.
As some may know I paid £1k last year through a local high street broker, where my family has gone for years. On the 12v, 18 nearly 19, 0 NCB was pretty good.
Anyway, I had a crash back in February, was at fault, as was totally obvious (hit 3rd party in rear).
My insurance renewal through Zurich (high street broker) was £1700 tried looking online, got varying quotes from £1100 10 month bonus accelerators, to a whoping £2200 with Quinn Direct.
Anyway, there was one more company I hadn't tried, Endsleigh. My insurance premium this year, crash declared, few mods declared (alarm & alloys), insured for commuting to Uni like old policy. . .
. . .£725!
The first thing the letter says that came with my insurance documents was "because you're a student, your business is very important to us. We're the only insurance company supported by the National Union of Students" (NUS).
My thinking is that I got such cheap insurance, because they wanted my business for the future. I'm not complaining, but might be worth a try for others.
Cheaper insurance, with a crash, than policy before
EDIT: Oh, and Endsleigh is like a company that find the cheapest quote around. My policy is underwritten by. . .Zurich

Don't really allow modifications, although there is a huge list. I was going to buy CorsaCF's black side skirts - added them to the policy when getting quotes as well as the alloys and alarm, went up to a whopping £2000
Oh yeah, the only downer, they don't really allow mods

Just to clear sumamt up, Endsleigh are NOT brokers... they are underwritten by Zurich purely because Zurich own the majority shareholding I know a lot of people who work for Endsleigh over in Cheltenham

quinn are worth a look.
500 quid this year down from 1200 last year, and they said that cosmetic mods are fine and wont affect the policy at all.
the only problem is, everyone says that the service is shit if you need to claim

well they do, but like deano said it adds a stupid amount onto the premium. Added £1200 for an exhaust, lower and alloys

Ahhh, fair enough, but if Zurich covers me for £700 through Endsleigh, and £1700 through themselves, something is wrong in this world.
Ahhh, by the way, when you do a quote on Endsleigh, it does a quick quote first, then do the full quote afterwards, where you put in you're a student.
Well Endsleigh were certainly cheapest for me

I just used Money Supermarket, but then thier quotes were roughly the same as my previous insurer so I decided to stay with Churchill. I have never seemed to get any decent quotes from Endsliegh, and this is the first time I have seen a consistancy in quote prices too as usually different companys prices vary by as much as 200% which is rediculous if they are all offering the same service
