Hi,

Just wanting peoples opinons on this subject and see what there thinking...

I am insured by Quinn, and it states:
quote:
Section 2 Liability to other people
Driving other cars

If your certificate of insurance says so, we also cover you, the policyholder, for your liability to other people while you are driving any other privately owned motor car which you do not own or have not hired under a hire-purchase or lease agreement, aslon as:
1. The vehicle is not owned by your employer or hired to them under a hire-purchase or lease agreement;
2. You currently hold a full European Union (EU) license;
3. The use of thr vehicle is overed on the certificate of insurance;
4. Cover is not provided by any other insurance;
5. You have the owner's permission to drive the vehicle;
6. The vehicle is in a roadworthy condition; and
7. You still have your vehicle and it has not been damaged beyond cost-effective repair.

This extension applies while driving within the territoral limits and only to private passenger vehicles.

So... reading that, its saying to me, I can buy any car i like, register it to someone of my family who doesnt drive, make sure its MOT worthy, my insurance company are aware... and i have permission from the owner ... then i can drive it without a insurance policy 3rd Party only!

However, when i have spoken to Quinn-Direct on the phone, i specifically asked do they need to be made aware i would be driving another car and need the reg, they said not!

So whats your thoughts? Because in a theory i could insure anycar be it a £50 rover... then go out buy a Evo(if i could afford one) then just drive it around but have it registered to my nan or something.

the car would have to be inrued by ure nan or whoever, and you wouldnt be covered if you wrote it off.
also im sure if they find you drive it more than your nan, or more than your own car they'll do you for fraud or whatever

Have a search, been discussed on here before, it depends on the insurance company, the other car doesn't always have to be insured.

Im with quinn direct. If i LET my corsa and make sure its all declared and MOT passed i can use that by only insuring a cheap car and leaving it on the drive while stil getting no-claims ?

If the insurance company does happen to let you do it the car is 100% illegal anytime you are not in it and it is parked on a public highway.

muppetsport, point 3 says it has to be insured, and the insurance on the car has to allow it to be driven by someone else using their insurance

ring them and ask. aslong as the car is not in your name, then they cover it, it doesnt actually say that the car has to be insured by anyone else. point 3 says its covered on the certificate of insurance ie the certificate the person who doesnt own the other car has. this is how my mate drives his.

worst case scenario - you crash the other car. I reckon you'll get fucked over, the way the terms and conditions are worded i think it will cause alot of hassle if it ever went to court or something.

ring them and check, but from what i gather off my mate, he is covered to drive anything aslong as road legal doesnt need any insurance as long as the car isnt in his name. i dont think its right at all, but it seems to be legal according to his documents.

problem being, if the police check your plate for insurance etc, its obviously going to come up that it has none. would they believe this cover people claim to have or not? i dont know. my insurance is basically worded the same as that above although id not put it to the test

My policy is the same but the car your planning on driving HAS to be covered by a seperate insurance policy!
