How often do you really do it?
When do you do it? ie. warm engine, or cold?

I've heard and read conflicting times from various sources

i havent checked mine in about 3 months .

I blame living in an area with hardly any flat roads (meaning i cant check my oil at home!). I'll see if i remember to check it at work tomorrow.

Checked my oil this morning. Car died at Tesco, recovery guy got it going. Engine blow up on the M6 20 minutes later Vauxhall say it needs a new cylinder head, tappets and invectors.

On my 22DTi if i check the oil on a warm engine it appears to be very low. Almost fooled me into topping the oil up.

Left it to stand all night, checked 1st thing this morning and as expected it was almost full, apparently the oil takes an absolute age to run down from the head.

I tend to check the fluids once a week to be safe and an oil service every 5k, thats approx once a yr for me.
