Right, abit of help for my dad..
He got his windows tinted on his focus 3 years ago, only yesterday did he get stopped because his side windows are illegal (he did know..)
They didn't give him any producer or any documents, just said "Take them off ASAP, i'll get my colleague to come and check the car in the near future.."
Do we have to remove them? As no producer was given or anything.. so where do we stand??

remove them, they are illegal. The car may be noted down and targeted by that particular patrol.
Is there a need for front tints?

I agree - nothing worse than police ganging up, and know the law more than you do.

Technically no, you don't have to remove them. When I got busted, they put a probation order on the car so it had to be off the road by 10pm that evening (it was 9pm when they got me) and wasn't allowed to use the car, until I'd took it to the station first to get it re-tested

i wouldnt bother if it was me .. just wait to see if he gets pulled again . if the rest of the car is 100% legal ie tyres and things then theres nothing to worry about

Yeahh everything else is fine.. 100%
And the back are limo tints, the side windows make the car look alot sleeker.. its a black focus, has tinted rear lights and tinted windows
Looks very smart imo..

Did they use a light tester?
I wouldn't be removing mine without documents to say I had to or VOSA catching me again with the probation notice.
I got stopped last year by VOSA, they checked them gave me the notice to say car is un-road worthy. swapped windows for standard, they came to me checked them over cleared the car and tints were back in 30mins later.
Nothing to worry about unless you start getting points etc.

So they let you off and gave you the opportunity to fix it by next time they catch up with you (they know where you live and they'll need to fill a quota by the end of the month) but you're not going to bother doing what they suggested in order to help you out.
I'll wait for the thread 'my dad for a fine/points/re-MOT/prohibition notice/speeding fine because the same copper remembered you took the piss out of him' etc.
The light tester is only for evidence for a conviction. You can tell if they're illegal by looking at them. They'll be marked with the factory tint level, probably 75% VLT which co-incidently is the legal limit for front side. Any additional tint whatsoever will render them illegal.

yeah i would just ditch the front tints now, they will look out for car and you will probably get a fine and a prohibition notice as soon as they see him out next time, its not worth the hassle

Take them off. It seems to me like they were pretty reasonable about it so to leave them on would take the piss and you'd fully deserve whatever they decide to do the next time they see the vehicle moving.

For future reference, if you get pulled over by the police and you know you have illegal tints on the fronts, open the windows before you get out of the car. they can ask you to close them, but you dont have to (they cant make you) and they cant do it themselves (without a warrant) therefore cant test them.
chances are they will probably do you for something else instead.

they'l probably arrest you under suspicion of driving an illegal car then check it themselves

Had this in july last year they said change them and if we pull you again and you still have them then we will put an injunction against your car and you will have to get it towed home...
they have since pulled me over twice and not even mentioned them.....

As said I reakon they will have just made a note to check the car next time they see it.
Is it just me or does anyone else think even tho tints look good and are great blocking the sunlight but on an early morning when its still dark or late at night they're just plain dangerous!

rear ones are ok, but windscreen and side windows are dangerous, hence being illegal
