shells arent torqued up yet, just nipped. i think it must be the rings. just not 100% sure it shud be that tight to turn.

If you do that, check with the pistons out and you'll know if it's the main bearings too

Yeah, but if the crank has been in and out, they could still be the problem

just a quick question before i put themback in:

is it ok to put cam lube onthe shells as it will be stood a while before being started, i was told that oil slowly seeps out and can cause them to run dry if u are turning the engine byhand a lot?

answers asap please

I use MPS assembly lube/cam lube on everything. its normal for it to be a bit tighter than normal due to the bores being honed and new rings.

did you check the shell sizes and crank journals for size? are the rings gapped properly?

checked ring gaps, they ok. didnt check jornals tho as dont have access to a micrometer

cant do it tonite anyway as the torque wrench i borrowed from work starts at 40nm, too high for the old vauxhall

if it's just been re-ringed and re-honed it will be quite tight, sort of tight where anything shorter than a 12" breaker and you won't be able to turn it over by the bottom pulley (uness you're arnie)... (thats with cams in, timed, all ready to go)

It will start freeing up after about 1500 miles when you start putting synthetic in, this is due to new rings exerting quite alot of pressure against the cylinder walls (which are honed), and need miles to bake the rings in.

tbh if the oil DOES seep out, you'll be fine, as within the first few cranking revolutions the oil pump will have already filled up all the internal galleries anyway.

+turning engine over by hand when it's being built (dryish) is also fine, as you wont be reaching anywhere near "wearing out" RPM's by hand . Just make sure surfaces are clinically clean and there's no grit etc...
