I was recently caught exceeding the speed limit by a mobile trap after a night down Southend.
Now as I had expected, and as had happened in the past, I expected the slip of paper saying 3 points and £60 please from the Police.
However, I recieved one with 3 options :
1. Pay £60 to cover the cost of a 3 hour course on speed awareness etc and no points;
2. Pay the fine and 3 points;
3. Take the case to court myself etc etc

Now what I want to know is how do they decide on who gets points with no options and who gets the options that I got? Is it an age thing? Or the mph you were over the limit? As I was clocked at 85mph in a 70 limit, and they phrase it in my letter to be a minor error in the judgement of my speed, but I think 15mph is a big error That's why I think it has something to do with age, as my previous points with no options were @ 21 & 24.

Anyone shed any light???

i think its an age thing, i got caught doing 52 in a 40 last year when i was 17 and i had no options, but a mate at work got the same options as you and he's 24, and i think he was well over 10mph above the speed limit

I never recieved those options when I was 24 though and I was less over the limit on my previous 2 offences.
Perhaps its done on the percentage you were over the limit??

Seems like it may just be luck of the draw

No option to take the course twice?

Maybe you only get one go at the course to stop repeat offenders?

sitting in a room with a police officer saying dont speed its very bad and they show you pictures of accidents and what happens, facts and figures just general things and you can also ask questions.

i'd do it but you can only do it once though.

Go on the shitty course. You don't even know if they would ever offer you the option of taking the course again, so you might as well avoid the 3 points this time!

I went on a speed awareness course in Nov 2006. Was about 2-3hours long and involved completing a computer assessed questionnaire and taking part in computer based simulations ie: spotting hazards, estimating speeds, following distances etc etc. Then a couple of relatively short seminars/presentations regarding speeding, it's consequences, reasons why people speed etc etc.
Was good as you learnt quite a bit from it and it's definitely worth paying to go on just for not receiving the points (cost £75). The worst bit however was the beginning and we had to introduce ourselves (I went first because I was sat near to the door) "My name's Jill, I'm 24 (at the time I was), from Aylesbury, and I got caught doing 36 in a 30mph zone" PMSL I felt like a right plonker

I was caught on the same mobile camera as my dad 15 mins later (i leave for work 15 mins after my old man)

He was 45 driving a honda crv and was offered the speed awareness thing,

i was 19 driving a corsa gsi and got no option just the points

My old man even complainded on my behalf (my sons being victomised becasue of his age etc) but was basicly fobbed off.

IMO they should be offering nthe course to young boy racers like i was (im 24 now) rather than the old

a bit off subject, but i got pulled over yesterday for using my mobile. copper came towards me n id just said goodbye n he saw me n pointed. so i drove down this road thinking hed leave it, but a minute later, there he is in my mirror, i carried on driving slowly as he made no signal for me to pull over and he followed me for about5 minutes, then i thought id get it over and done with so i pulled in outside a shop. he then asked if i knew why he was following me n stuff, but luckily he didnt fine me or give me points, which would have made me loose my license after only 10 months, because his support unit was busy, which i didnt understand and he said hed let me off this time. although it was my fault for using my phone, but u never think ull get caught until u do
