Will the bank know what it is? Or do they just know to cancel it or whatever?

sounds like mobile phone insurance to me

you normally get 3 months free when you take out a contract and then it charges you every month thereafter unless you cancel it

just go to your bank, stop the dd and wait for them to call you about it

You say you have an O2 DD. My phone isurance is included in my O2 direct debit, not sepeately. Sound to me like the bank have put some extra option on your account without asking you, or by misleading you.

I took out the insurance because it was free for three months; but I canceleld it the direct debit at HSBC before the first payment was due. You're not contractually tied to the insurance so can cancel it at any time
