Archive your e-mails then copy the archive file to your new PC.

As for wiping it, format the C:\ drive or destroy it. I took an axe to my old one.

Find any 'Free' program such as

http://www.whitecanyon.com/wipedrive-erase-hard-drive.php

File and export will also backup your emails and address books to disc etc...

Angle Grinder your hard drive.

Incinerate it.

Drill through it in numerous places.

Don't try and use one of these magical wiper programs .etc It needs to be physically destroyed.

If you give it a fair few whacks then yes it should, probably best to do it in a towel or something to prevent Jade taking you to A+E with some hard drive in your eye

Physically damaged drives can still have data recovered from them. I'd wipe it properlly then destroy it.

I don't doubt that but physically destroyed drives dont... damaged yes but you destroy it then no.

I'd always say your best bet is to burn it/incinerate.

Keep the hard drive, do not throw it away.

Any data can be retreived from them.

I've just phoned him, the bright spark that he is has gone out the back and demolished his PC. Now he can't get online cos he can't get his new laptop to work

Right he's asked me to post this for him - how do you connect a wireless router (buffalo) to Vista? (think thats what he asked?)

Back in the days of DOS, I had the pleasure of doing this on my work PC

c:\ [return]

Format c:

The bloke dealing with our hardware suggested I typed it in and hit the return button as I would almost certainly never get the opportunity to do it again.

And he was right too.....although I guess formatting can be reversed these days
