removing a helper spring wont stiffen the ride up, just make it more harsh

well when i had the car lower the helper spring was more compressed and front didnt reli move alot and didnt rub on arch at all and i had to set it higher to get the tracking and camber done and seems to rub when i hit a pot hole or like a hump on a motorway, duno if the helper spring is now making it softer as less compressed?cheers dave
