After recovering from my knee operation the last 3 yrs i've decided to get back into a martial art after doing karate for 7 years. Not interested in re-doing karate as i reached black belt already.
I was wondering if anyone on here studies Aikido. It's always been a martial art i've been interested in but never looked into local dojos. Finally found some locally and thinking of giving it a go. If you study it how long have you been learning and have you done any other martial arts to compare it to?

I done Aikido for about 6 months but unfortunaetly the guy who took the class dropped down dead of a heart attack and nobody replaced him. Really interesting Martial Art, clever in so far it is not a striking art, it deals with balance and using your opponents energy against them. It seemed easy enough to pick up but I could imagine it taking a very long time to master

Yeh definately, thats what interests me is the style of using there own force/power against them. Plus because its smooth flowing circular movements it should be ok for my knee. Did you go up a grade in those 6 months? It takes most of your life to actually get to a grandmaster level. The blackbelts are insanely hard gradings, have to do you vs 4 attackers etc

No unfortunately I never achieved my first grading, you'll find that syllabus for each grading is quite extensive and we where told it wasn't as easy to progress quickly in comparison to other Martial Arts

Yeh i thought so, i have managed to get hold of the syllabus and what you need to do for each kyu. Its very extensive compared to what I used to do for karate, this is definately a martial art that will take years and years and years to progress!
