Ive been reading the mens health forum today for some advice about getting fit. As you may know, Ive lost just over 2 stone since xmas with plain old healthy diet and exercise, but i seem to have reached a bit of a plateau with the weight loss and after reading the forums it looks like just the cardio (swimming) isnt enough, and I should be doing weights aswell (along side a healthy diet, which I already have pretty much sorted, but i went through and worked out my BMR, how much i need for my level of activitym and how much i need to lose weight, so im gonna pay extra attention to the diet over the next few weeks too).
I was thinking about getting a home gym and some dumbells, and was wondering if anyone had a cheapish one they could recommend, and where they got it from? Ive seen a few on ebay, id be willing to spend up to about £150 at the most, but are the ones they have in argos any good? I know you dont NEED a home gym for exercise, but I know that I could build it into a routine and that I was actually use it, and I dont really want to use the gym in town cos everyone that uses it are fit already

Doing weights will help you tone more than lose weight. But muscles weighs more than fat, so if you do start bulking you'll notice your actual weight rising.
Only way to lose more weight would be to do more and varying cardio work and cut back the diet more (obviously though I dont know what this currently is so may not be possible or a good idea!).
In regards to what home gym. Just get some free weights and a bench

Yeah rowing is good. Hard work if you do it properly too.

No I really dont like running, I get my cardio workout from swimming at least 2 miles a day every weekday. I do the first half mile in about 13 minutes pushing quite hard, and then the full mile in about 28 to 30 minutes, so its not like I just leisurely swim breastroke while chatting to the old dears down the pool

I got a rowing machine upstairs too, I started using it a while ago but the builders have been in the house for the last few weeks doing the kitchen and bathrooms so i havent wanted to get back on it I will do though later in the week when they have finished

Id try to vary your cardio workout a bit then and add more to it other than swimming (rowing or get on a bike is probably best for you personally if you dont like running).
Get the weights if you want, but as I said expect this to tone more the lose weight, and possibly add to your overall weight (although your bodyfat % will drop).

at the end ot he day numbers on the scales dont really mean much, i dont mind gaining weight so long as i lose fat. This is the link I read through earlier...

I only drink alcohol once a week now too, but im gonna have a few weeks off I think starting on tuesday, gonna really concentrate over the next 2 weeks on exercise and diet and see if the fat starts coming off again.

what kind of weight would you like to be? also a home gym wouldnt really be needed, some good weights, a bench, ez barbell, straight barbell and the weights to go with. As youve already got a rowing machine so ud be pretty much sorted with that

im currently on a cutting diet (for my ibiza hol, lol) anyway it is a sunday to friday diet with saturday off, a very restricted diet, very little carbs with high protien, te idea of ur day off shocks ur metabolism back into firing up fast, so far in 11 weeks i have dropped 2 stone 2 pounds of fat, and managed to refrain from burning too much muscle off, just trim ur diet up as much as u can, it all starts there!!!

I was 12st 8lbs when I first decided I needed to get fit, last time I weighed myself I was 10st 6lbs, so im going in the right direction, its jus a case of turning the fat to muscle now. I took this pic a coupla days ago cos I wanted to keep a diary of my progress, Im pleased with the weight i have lost, but still got a bit to go.

^^^ i think we all know that, fat is stored energy, when u burn it off, you in effect replace it with muscle (to some extent)
yer im still doing cardio and weights, religiously lol, i have 1 carb meal a day and that is on my evening dinner, the rest are every 3 hours, things like protien shakes, boiled eggs, weetabix and loads of veg, id write my diet up, but i really cant be arsed, if u really wanna know, then u2u me and il do it later
